As an counselor in Santa Clarita, CA, I’ve worked with many clients who struggle with ADHD, and I see a pattern that’s both uniquely challenging and universally relatable: the constant pull toward distractions and the struggle to finish what we start. For those of us with ADHD, our brains are wired to crave dopamine, which means our minds are drawn toward anything that promises excitement or novelty, even if it pulls us away from the task at hand.

Life with ADHD: The Constant Search for Stimulation

If you were to look at my kitchen table right now, you’d see a 1,000-piece puzzle, my watercolor supplies, a book I’m reading for clients, a package waiting to be sent, and a craft I want to do with my granddaughter. It’s like an art gallery of “projects in progress.” I know many of you can relate to this scene—maybe your desk or your living room is filled with projects started but never completed.

This endless search for stimulation can lead to some common struggles in daily life. We end up constantly multitasking, often feeling like we’re letting people down by being late or forgetting appointments. At school or work, this can make us feel defeated before we even start. And while ADHD brings many unique strengths—creativity, quick thinking, and spontaneity—it also creates some real hurdles, especially around consistency and follow-through.

The Role of Faith in Finding Consistency
As a Christian counselor, I find comfort and strength in the Bible, and Psalm 121 has become a favorite passage to share with clients who feel like their lives are too scattered. This Psalm reassures us of God’s unchanging presence and protection: He’s steady and consistent even when our lives feel anything but. God is always there to lean on when we’re feeling the pull of distraction or when motivation is running low.

In my experience, clients with ADHD often feel they need to “fix” themselves before they can accomplish their goals or have successful relationships. But I encourage a different approach: Instead of trying to be perfect or hiding your ADHD, rely on God’s care and consistency. Ask Him to guide you to the right people who can help, whether that’s a therapist, coach, or support group. ADHD doesn’t have to be a solo journey.

Strategies for Managing ADHD
While God is our ultimate source of strength, there are practical steps you can take to manage ADHD symptoms and stay on track:

  • Prioritize Structure and Routine: Sticking to routines may feel challenging but can bring a surprising sense of relief and stability.

  • Break Down Tasks: Tackling large tasks by breaking them into smaller steps makes it easier to focus and follow through.

  • Seek Out Support: Whether it’s from a counselor, friend, or support group, don’t be afraid to lean on those around you.

  • Mindfulness and Breathing Exercises: These can help slow your mind down and provide a moment of calm in the middle of a busy day.

Trusting in God’s Steady Care
No matter how many projects you’ve started and stopped or how inconsistent you may feel, remember that God’s care for you is constant. While ADHD may pull you in many directions, God’s guidance is unwavering. His love remains consistent, even when our focus doesn’t. Embrace that grace and remember: you don’t have to handle everything alone.
